“My earliest memories of hip-hop culture came from the witnessing of a close range murder just outside my window. I remember shortly after, turning on the TV to find the Ghetto Boys video “My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me” playing & thinking to myself the image I had just witnessed on a rooftop outside my window was what I was just watching on TV. From that point on I was captivated by the culture. It felt real to me & as time passed & more personal struggles came around, it was the music I would listen to that would help me cope.” ~VS
Going into his early 20’s, his current detrimental path took a sudden halt when he found that the bad decisions of his past had finally caught up with him landing Lamont a real charge. It was then that he had began working with a good friend & mentor Marcus Turner who had taken VS under his wing to help him attain knowledge of the music industry & help him build a solid foundation as an emcee.
“Hip-hop was all that my older friends listened to. The neighborhood introduced me to hip-hop.” ~VS
Introduced to the studio by the 920 management team VS has never returned to the corner. He was taught that talent means nothing without wisdom & guidance in the music industry. Since then he found himself blessed with opportunities sharing ciphers & exchanging lyrics with countless emcees & other amazing artists. Studying greats such as DMX, the late great Big Pun, Rakim, A&R’s such as Lenny S, & his childhood friend Omar Grant at Roc Nation, VS has earned himself a bright future amongst all the trials & tribulations of his past.
“The name VS stands for Victory & Struggle. I chose this name because in life there must be balance, there is no up without down, no left without right, no good without bad. VS represents my constant struggle with the good & bad within. I’ve come from a background of chaos but I have found my balance.” ~VS
VS is now proudly married & had started a family with his newborn son & his beautiful wife of over 7 years. He has traveled across the globe when most had said he would never make it out the Bronx or even live past 21. As an artist, VS has put out multiple successful mixtapes & is currently working on a new mixtape, which is soon to be released, as well as a new album due out in 2015.
“Music is like life, forever moving & changing. However, I feel like the soul is missing in all genres of music now. The digital era has been a gift & a curse. It really made it so easy for artists like myself to put out projects that would have been extremely difficult in the past without a good financial backing & the right people, but people now are forgetting you have to actually be good at what you do also. You have to get out & touch the people. Music is not digital, its emotional.” ~VS
Some of VS’s influences include Nas, Rakim, Scarface, Trick Daddy, 5o, Kanye, Bob Marley, Luthor Vandross, Miles Davis, Jimmy Hendricks, Pac, & most of all his Grandfather Henry Stubbs, his wonderful wife Ajanna Brockenbaugh, & his 2 year old son Logan Brockenbaugh. He also gives high praises to his team as well stating that, “if someone comes up with a creative idea, whether it be music, art, or production I have to add them to my list of influences.“
